Indonesia has a major export in the world market. Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) classifies Indonesia's exports into two: oil, gas and non-oil and gas.

BPS reports Indonesia's monthly export performance on a regular basis. If exports are higher than imports, Indonesia will record a trade surplus. Meanwhile, if imports are greater than exports, the trade balance will be red.

To facilitate data collection, BPS classifies each exported goods by using the goods code according to international standards, namely the Harmonized System Code "HS". This HS code is also used to simplify the tariff system, trade transactions, transportation, and others. For now, there are a lot of HS codes that have been recorded on the official BPS website, and are updated regularly.

Non-oil and gas

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS),  transcribed the value of Indonesia's non-oil and gas exports to reach US$ 120.45 billion, equivalent to Rp. 1.72 quadrillion (exchange rate of Rp. 14,269 per US$) throughout 2021. That value grew by 58.33% compared to the previous year which was only US$ 76.07 billion.

Non-oil and gas exports increased by US$21,266 million in December 2021 and decreased by US$14,395.6 million in February 2021.

Below is one of the largest non-oil and gas export commodities in Indonesia :

1. Palm Oil
Indonesia controls about 55% of the world's palm oil export market, and is known as the king of the world's palm oil market. According to data from the Indonesian Palm Oil Association (GAPKI) last year, Indonesia's palm oil exports amounted to 34 million tons or $22.9 billion. Palm oil and its derivatives are included in the category of animal/vegetable oils and fats. BPS noted, the highest commodity export performance category was non-oil and gas exports. Palm oil is widely exported to China, India, Europe and other countries.

2. Coal
Indonesia is the third largest coal producer in the world after China and India. Coal production can reach more than 500 million tons per year, but domestic demand is still low, so most of the coal or about 70% of Indonesia's coal is sent abroad. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources calculates that Indonesia's coal exports in 2020 will be 405 million tons, exceeding the export target (102.5 percent) which was originally set at 395 million tons. The ten coal export destinations are China, India, the Philippines, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan, Thailand, and Bangladesh.

Oil and gas

Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) reported the value of Indonesia's oil and gas (oil and gas) exports of US$ 1.09 billion in December 2021. Meanwhile, the value of oil and gas imports reached US$ 3.38 billion in the same month.

In November 2021, oil and gas exports increased by US$1,332.4 million and decreased by US$860.6 million in February 2021.

In general, the contribution of oil and gas exports is still lower than non-oil and gas export. In November 2021, the contribution of non-oil and gas exports was US$21.51 billion. Indonesia's main oil and gas exports are crude oil, oil and gas products. Examples of oil and gas products shipped internationally by PT Pertamina (Persero) include Avtour, Lubricants, High Speed Diesel (HSD) and Marine Liquid Fuel (MFO).
